Getting the studio's news in Discord or Slack

A notification channel sends the studio's news into a room rather than into an inbox. It earns its place as soon as there are two of you, and especially if you already spend the day in Discord or Slack.

Read this before wiring anything up

A room shows the news to everybody in it, without regard for anyone's permissions in Kalepio.

This is not a technical limitation, it is what a room is. If somebody in the studio is not allowed to open certain orders, a channel wired into a room they are in will still show them that a brief arrived, and for which job.

So: wire up a room whose membership you control. That is the only precaution to take, and you take it once.

The three kinds of channel

• Discord. A room webhook URL, taken from the room's settings on the Discord side.
• Slack. An incoming webhook URL, taken from your Slack workspace.
• Generic webhook. Your own address, which receives a structured payload. Use this if you are wiring up anything other than the two above.

In all three cases Kalepio only ever posts to the address you give it. It does not connect to your Discord or Slack account and asks them for no permissions.

What a channel can receive

Four kinds of news, ticked channel by channel:

• New brief received, or an answer to a later round.
• Payment received.
• New message from a client, left unread.
• Your studio is over its plan.

A channel must have at least one type ticked, otherwise it could never do anything, and the form refuses it.

The other notifications never go to a room. The ones about somebody's access to a studio are personal: they are addressed to one person, and announcing them in a team room would be telling everybody that a colleague's account is about to be suspended.

The Test button

Every channel has a Test button, which posts a message into the room right away.

Use it every time you add or change a channel: a mistyped webhook URL produces no visible error anywhere else, the channel simply stays silent. The test is the only way to find out before a real piece of news is lost.

The test message announces itself as a test, including on a generic webhook. It does not pretend to be a brief.

Knowing whether a channel still works

Each row shows Active or Inactive, along with the date of the last delivery or the last failure.

That is where you see that a room has been deleted on the Discord side, or that a webhook has been revoked: deliveries fail, the failure date is recent, and nothing else would have told you.

What it does not replace

A channel adds to what each person receives, it does not replace it. Your colleagues keep their bell and their own email preferences, each set on their own side in their personal settings.

If the point is precisely that nobody gets email because everything lands in the room, each person switches their own off: it is a personal setting, and the studio cannot make it for them.

Depending on your plan

Notification channels depend on your plan. If yours does not allow them, the screen says so and offers to show you your subscription rather than leaving you in front of a button that does nothing.
